Nori is hiring a
Web3 Chief of Staff

Compensation: $110k - $124k

Location: WA Seattle, Washington, United States

Tl;dr

Our CEO Paul Gambill wants a chief of staff to partner with on leading operations for the entire Nori organization. You’ll be Paul’s right hand, attending the same meetings as him, leading preparation for board meetings, and acting as a project manager for the Nori leadership team. Your job is to be attuned to what’s happening inside the organization, help with operational management, and aid Paul in managing his tasks. Generalists with an aptitude for quick learning and decision making will be very good at this job.

About Nori

We’re a team of believers. We believe that humanity can stop and even reverse climate change by removing over 1 trillion tonnes of CO2 from the atmosphere. How do we get people to remove that much carbon at scale? Pay them! Nori’s marketplace is the infrastructure that creates the financial incentive for people and companies to remove massive amounts of CO2 from the air.

Nori is a venture-backed and highly values-oriented company. Our focus is on people and planet. We’re composed of a diverse set of people with complementary skillsets, all unified in the mission of restoring the world’s atmospheric carbon balance back to 300ppm.

We strongly suggest that you read in detail about our company values and mission at https://nori.com/careers.

About the role

This is an all encompassing role, meant to be the right-hand to our CEO. You’ll help with board meeting preparation, leading management meetings, and a range of initiatives—big and small—that support company operations and strategy. This role will evolve over time as the company grows and market conditions evolve.

Paul currently manages the Nori Leadership Team (LT) with daily standups and a weekly planning meeting. These people are the leads of each of the below teams, and it’s at these meetings that the operational strategy of the company is set. You’re needed to be a facilitator of this team, like a project manager, and you’ll be empowered to do so as Paul hands that off.

This is a really cool opportunity for someone with good organizational skills to get experience with operations in a fast-growing startup. For an overview article that informed our job description, please read: https://review.firstround.com/why-you-need-two-chiefs-in-the-executive-office

Who You’ll Work With

You’ll work most closely with Paul, the CEO. Additionally, you’ll be a part of the leadership team (LT) at Nori, which consists of the team leads of each of the below teams plus the CEO and CoS. But beyond that, you’ll want to get to know everyone at Nori (it’s only 16 people so this is still doable!) to understand what makes our culture tick.

Each of these teams work a little bit differently, but they work hand in hand with each other to create an inventory of verified carbon removals that can be sold through our marketplace.

The Product Team

The Product Team is responsible for the Nori marketplace, supply-side enrollment app, marketing website, and any of the technical/software aspects of Nori’s work. The Product team works with the other teams—Supply, Sales, and Communications—to support business development needs. They’re building everything relevant, from crypto wallet integration, to agricultural data capture.

The Supply & Methodology Teams

The Supply team works with Nori Suppliers: anyone who can verifiably remove and store CO2 from the atmosphere. The Methodology team works on developing the requirements for how projects are enrolled (see current methodology). Both teams report to the Head of Supply and Methodology. As Nori’s current focus is on our Croplands Methodology, the Supply team is working with farmers as well as the partners and companies around them to enroll croplands into the Nori market.

The Demand Team

The Demand team sells carbon. Specifically they sell NRTs to B2B customers as well as through partnerships with other companies, like NFT marketplaces and carbon footprint companies. They stay in tight communication with the Supply team about how much inventory they will have to work with. And they partner with the Comms team around how to get marketing messaging out, and creating new content for presenting to potential customers and partners.

The Communications and Marketing Team

The Comms and Marketing team produces and hosts our two podcasts, Reversing Climate Change and Carbon Removal Newsroom, as well as manages all our marketing and social media channels.

Five Key Aspects of the Role

  • Be extremely curious. There’s a lot going on here at Nori! Agriculture, crypto, fintech, podcasting, NFTs, you name it. We’re all constantly learning, and it’ll be important that you’re curious to learn about all the different things our teams are working on. We all read a lot and are regularly sharing new articles and books in Slack.
  • Communicate and check in with teams regularly. We like to move fast here. And that means that sometimes teams are learning quickly about what their needs are as they adapt to changing conditions in the market. Imagine yourself roving around the office, sitting in on team meetings and learning exactly what it is they’re doing and what they need help with, and then communicating those priorities back to Paul. You should be—and be seen by everyone else as—the most in-the-know person at the company.
  • Continuously improve. This is one of our core company values, and it’s just as applicable in this role. How are the different teams working together? What operational improvements might we consider? What should Paul be spending his time on that he isn’t already?
  • Organizational ability. There’s so much going on that your attention to detail is going to be critical. This means using the right tool for the job when it comes to documentation and communication. Facilitating meetings and acting like a project manager. Keep the trains running on time.
  • Leadership. This role can grow into many things, and all of them will require your ability to act as a leader with high emotional intelligence.

You’ll Be Responsible For…

  • Running Leadership Team meetings
  • Helping Paul with operational initiatives and tasks that could include anything from HR to finance to running board meetings
  • Ensuring Paul is working on the most important things at the time
  • Playing an integral internal communications role, keeping leadership apprised of team priorities and vice versa.

Must-haves

  • At least 4 years experience at a startup or tech company
  • Strong organizational skills including meeting management and team leadership

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience working in a startup environment
  • Familiarity with either crypto or climate tech industries
  • Management or project management experience

Key outcomes and metrics

  • Tracking progress of the Leadership Team’s initiatives
  • Paul has more time for writing/speaking because you’ve taken important tasks off his plate
  • You get exposure to all aspects of operating the company

You’ll be a good culture fit here if you can...

  • Handle a steep learning curve
  • Work with abstract ideas and requirements to create something more concrete
  • Know how to measure progress meaningfully
  • Stay playful and light without taking things too seriously or personally
  • Limit work in progress and stay focused on the current goal

Key challenges in this role

This role will touch all parts of the Nori business. The biggest challenges will be context switching and dealing with the unknown. We’re at the forefront of an entirely new industry on the carbon side, and are riding a wave of technological progress on the crypto side that is difficult to keep up with. You will need to become familiar with both the climate tech and crypto industries, which will require a lot of reading.

What’s the payoff for all this hard/fun work?

You’re not just working at some mobile ads startup—you’re directly helping build products to reverse climate change. Here are some of the non-cash benefits we offer:

  • 100% of health, dental, and vision benefits covered for you and dependents
  • Four weeks of PTO, up to five after a year of service
  • Paid holidays, including the week between Christmas and New Year’s off every year
  • 12 weeks of parental leave
  • 401k with 3% company match
  • Stock options
  • NORI tokens

Beyond those measurable benefits, we also think this is just a really fun place to work:

  • You’ll get to work with experts in carbon sequestration and marketplace economics who are defining a new industry.
  • There is a steep learning curve here, and for people who get excited by that, there’s no better place to be.
  • We have a lot of fun in our office, keep a well-stocked pantry and fridge, and generally like each other’s company. Happy hours in Ballard happen regularly!

Logistics

We are committed to in-person work in our Ballard neighborhood office in Seattle and look forward to working with you there.

The expected salary range for this role is between $110,000 to $124,000, depending on experience. We use detailed benchmarking tools to establish salary and equity offers, and everyone at the company is paid in the 55th percentile for their experience and role. For this reason, we’re transparent about what we can pay you, and we don’t negotiate on compensation.
