I am currently architecting and building a couple startup offline-first apps in stealth mode using Lit, BeerCSS, Atomic Design, GunDB for an encrypted decentralized frontend database that syncs peer-to-peer, minimal Node.js on the server, a CloudFlare tunnel, and Astro for a static CMS. Here’s why: it’s fast. This stack keeps close to the W3C standards, and so is close to the browser’s “bare metal.” I’m going to explain this briefly, to show the kind of tech decisions we can make with your stack.
Lit web components are browser-native, “future-proof” because a W3C standard, and update the DOM directly, so save the processor cycles & memory required by a virtual DOM (which React uses). This is perfect for rendering changes to the page efficiently. And it groups related HTML, CSS, and JavaScript all in one reusable, composable module.
Atomic design organizes the application into reusable chunks of code at multiple levels of abstraction (atoms, molecules, organisms, templates, pages).
BeerCSS uses native HTML elements as much as possible, and styles them through web standard CSS (the way HTML elements are intended to be used) to fit the Material Design 3 spec, rather than creating custom replacements for native HTML elements. This saves memory, processing speed, file size, and developer attention.
GunDB is a decentralized frontend-native database which live-syncs data peer to peer, enabling fast loading from the client-side cache or syncing from the data feed, in an optimal path through the peer network, to each user’s browser. The middle tier between the frontend and the database is much simpler, and faster, than the standard client-server architecture.
Node.js is JavaScript so can share libraries and developer mindshare with the frontend, and handles many simultaneous requests with low latency through its asynchronous IO.
CloudFlare tunnels cache static files in a global CDN to relieve stress on the server.
Astro generates static pages once per change, rather than on every page load.
The result is pages and data which load and render to the DOM very quickly. This is brilliant, and the kind of architecture I’ve wanted for a long time! You may need something different, but I want to build something as awesome as this.
