BlockFi is looking for a Staff Observability Engineer to join our growing team!
About Your Team
The Observability team helps the product and engineering organizations explore and understand our most critical systems. We must find the balance of sorting through the noise to find the signal using deep knowledge of our platform. Our team's mission is to provide tools and infrastructure to enable BlockFi engineers to build product features, shepherd them to production with confidence, and monitor them in production to ensure optimal system performance.
Your Mission
As a Staff Engineer, you will tackle hands-on, high impact work as we develop a platform built for global scale. You will proactively identify problems, design and implement technical solutions and tools, and mentor and teach more junior engineers. We are looking for detail-oriented senior engineers who have real world distributed systems experience at scale.
- Architect/Design: Ensure architecture and design decisions are aligned with business vision, and that our systems are built for availability, reliability, scalability, performance, and security from the ground up.
- Deliver: Execute on plans and designs, ensuring that teams adhere to quality standards through cross-team communication, mentoring, code review, and backlog grooming.
- Elevate: Continuously improve engineering standards, processes, planning, solutions, and efficiency. Guide engineers in focusing on outcomes and carefully considering business goals, trade offs, quality attributes, cross-cutting concerns, and risks.
- Adapt: Quickly learn new tools and technologies, develop an understanding of existing systems, and identify and tackle high impact work.
- Own: Monitor system health; ensure alerts, metrics, and runbooks are in place; debug issues in prod; and ensure that more junior engineers are getting the help they need.
Your Expertise
- Technical Breadth and Depth in Observability: Solid industry experience working with, designing, and building Observability solutions at scale.
- Technical Ownership: Experience owning software systems end-to-end, designing, estimating, implementing, testing, maintaining, debugging, and supporting high-quality software in production.
- Communication: Excellent communication, presentation and interpersonal skills. Able to listen and learn from as well as explain complex ideas to stakeholders of varying levels of technical expertise.
- Collaboration: Demonstrable experience with establishing strong relationships with technical and nontechnical stakeholders, integrating a variety of perspectives (end users, product, engineering, etc.).
- Initiative and focus on outcomes: Prepared to take on high impact work across contexts and as the need arises, working independently and taking initiative while maintaining transparency and collaboration.
- Adaptive: Ability and motivation to quickly learn new languages, technologies and tools. Pragmatic bias toward outcomes, and technical decisions that solve real business problems.
- Exposure and expertise with:
- Logging systems and concepts, such as ELK, Splunk, and Grafana Loki
- Metrics monitoring systems, such as Grafana and Prometheus
- Distributed tracing platforms such as Jaeger and Honeycomb
- Infrastructure paradigms such as Kubernetes and AWS ECS
