Come create the future

Nokia is committed to innovation and technology leadership. Your career here will have a positive impact on people’s lives and will help us build the capabilities needed for a more productive, sustainable, and inclusive world. We challenge ourselves to create an inclusive way of working where we are open to new ideas, empowered to take risks and fearless to bring our authentic selves to work.

The team you'll be part of

Nokia Bell Labs is the world-renowned research arm of Nokia, having invented many of the foundational technologies that underpin information and communications networks and all digital devices and systems. This research has produced nine Nobel Prizes, five Turing Awards and numerous other awards.

The Software Systems Research Department is part of the Software and Data Systems Research Lab in Bell Labs and is responsible for driving fundamental research on all aspects of the design, implementation, evaluation, and verification of emerging software systems. The team takes an experimental systems approach in building real systems to investigate new research ideas. It investigates software-based platforms at all scales, from handheld devices to cloud computing data centers. Areas of special focus include decentralized and distributed systems, Web technologies, operating systems, privacy, software engineering and—increasingly—Web3/cryptonetworks technologies. The department has members in Murray Hill (NJ, USA).

What you will learn and contribute to

We are looking for distributed systems researchers with a passion for emerging Web3 technologies and decentralized systems to help us invent and build groundbreaking Web solutions and tools that serve millions of users. Our research explores and validates the benefits of decentralization as we design and implement trusted and highly-scalable systems for intuitive collaboration and interaction. The research assets you develop may be tested and commercialized in collaboration with Nokia business groups, internal incubation teams, or spin-out partners. You will maintain strong relationships with other stakeholders in the Software and Data Systems Research Lab, the Strategy & Technology organization, and other Nokia Business Groups. You will also maintain a strong relationship to the world’s best research institutions to partner for successful delivery on the research program.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Carry out ground-breaking research in the areas of emerging software systems (Web3, decentralized systems, cryptonetworks, blockchain, privacy-preserving systems) with focus on above mentioned research agendas for creating both theoretical innovations and novel practical implementations.
  • Propose new innovations, implement, validate, and accelerate their adoption through Nokia business groups, incubation, or external spin-offs.
  • Publish research through the major research conferences and journals worldwide.
  • Keep an active and visible role in the research community through conference committees and reviewing panels.
  • Create and maintain strong collaborative associations with university-based researchers.
  • Help define and shape the department’s research vision and program.

Your skills and experience

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent experience) in computer science, data science, electrical engineering, software engineering, computer engineering or related disciplines.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems and Web technologies.
  • Good understanding of large-scale software systems, data analysis and AI/ML systems, and hands on experience with modern software development frameworks.
  • An interest in cryptonetworks and Web3 technologies.
  • Experience with open source.
  • Strong research credentials and proven track record of disruptive innovation, with publications in prestigious journals and conferences in relevant fields.
  • Strong written and spoken communications skills.
  • Ability to conduct independent research.
