Expanding our presence in Australia is a major goal for Gemini in early 2022. The country presents an exciting growth opportunity for Gemini. Our customer first mentality and the time and effort we have spent building a trusted exchange focused on licensing, compliance and security, position us favorably when expanding within this market, allowing us to do so without some of the increased hurdles that could be faced by our competitors.
Our plan is to hire a Country Manager for Australia in early 2022, with strong generalist experience building new businesses or branches from the ground up. My mid-2022, we aim to have a talent hub established, comprising staff across functions, including Business Development and Software/Product Development.

The Role: Country Manager, Australia
The Country Manager, Australia will be based in Sydney, where Gemini plans to establish a larger presence. Through highly cross-functional work, you will be the leader facilitating our full operational, regulatory, and commercial development to drive growth and success within the country. Key to the development and implementation of Gemini’s growth in Australia will be effectively building regulatory relationships with central banks and other regulators, providing oversight, advice, and recommendations (alongside Gemini’s Compliance and Legal functions) to both global functional leaders and Regional heads. Building proactive relationships with these regulators will help to future-proof Gemini to commercial and regulatory developments.
The Country Manager, Australia will work closely with other functional and business stakeholders globally across Business Development, Compliance, Technology, Legal, Finance, and Risk to achieve expansionary milestones for Gemini in the country. This role is expected to build collaborative relationships with these functions, and partner closely with them to advise senior management to ensure Gemini’s Australian strategy and execution is aligned with Gemini’s broader strategy and objectives. They will also be the operational leader for the Australia office, and over time may help recruit additional staff into the office, potentially including Business Development, Support, Marketing/Communications, Engineering, and Product. This person will support partnerships opportunities, including developing and signing new relationships with local and regional Partners. Finally, the Country Manager of Australia will be the face of Gemini in the local marketplace, and as such, will be the ultimate point of contact for Australia-based clients, regulators, and other third parties as appropriate.
This position will report to Gemini’s New York-based Global Chief Operating Officer.
Responsibilities:
- In close collaboration with global functions, execute the end-to-end establishment and build-up of Gemini in Australia at the operational, commercial, and regulatory level.
- Help to build out the first hires for the Australia team, helping source and hire individuals across varying disciplines and levels of seniority.
- Oversee day-today operations of the jurisdiction, managing resources and local product launches.
- Support legal, compliance and risk teams to ensure product launches and long term product strategies are compliant with local regulations.
- Represent Gemini as the local liaison for any regulators, and key strategic partners.
- Provide strategic insight to Gemini’s global Business Development team on the intricacies of the Australian market, and play an active role in business development projects related to acquiring and growing customer relationships.
- Through marketing and PR strategy, coordinated with our US-based leads, work to elevate the brand and positioning of Gemini in the country.
- Conduct business and financial planning for Gemini’s Australia-based business, in partnership with the Global COO and Finance team.
- Ensure best-in-class approach to all operational aspects of the business process.
- Work with the local board and global Leadership to establish short-range and long-range goals, strategies, plans, and policies for Gemini’s business in Australia.
- Review, own, and manage the financial forecast and budgeting and financial reporting, as prepared by the Financial Operations and Accounting team.
- Advise on how Gemini’s offerings need to evolve to match the current and future needs of the local market and surpass similar offerings of competitors.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience operating within sophisticated and international financial services businesses (including banking, payments, or broader FinTech).
- A proven track record of building strong relationships with regulators Australia.
- Experience driving operating effectively in an extremely high growth, matrixed environment.
- A track record of working across boundaries, borders, and functions to ensure communication, decision-making, strategy and execution are in line with global objectives, yet appropriately applied to the local market of Australia.
- Proven experience within a relevant, regulated financial services organization and a strong understanding of sophisticated products and services with relevant adjacencies to digital assets, including current/ developing knowledge of the emerging regulatory requirements.
- The experience, gravitas, confidence and stature to make a strong impact at all levels both internally and with external audiences.
- Ability to proactively analyze relevant business drivers and strategies with senior management and colleagues to put in place appropriate processes and controls.
- Native or permanent resident status in Australia.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience expanding organizations into new territories with integral technology platforms such as Global Transaction Services, Global Markets, Custody, Clearing and Exchanges or broader e-Commerce, Payment Services etc. will be advantageous.
- Experience working within a global organization and tasked with standing up new office(s) in new jurisdictions.
- Experience developing growth strategies and leading teams for consumer facing businesses.
