The opportunity: 

Uphold is looking for an experienced compliance officer to join our growing European Compliance team as the deputy MLRO. This is an exciting opportunity to help build out our regulatory compliance program, supporting our local MLRO as well as the global CCO and wider teams.

 

What you’ll be doing primarily:

  • Act as a deputy to the MLRO: Support the MLRO to deliver their responsibilities as regards the Money Laundering regulations. This means work on complex cases, strategic projects and coordinate cross-departmental initiatives. 
  • Support long-term strategy planning and enhance departmental governance framework. 
  • Work on ensuring policies and procedures remains fit for purpose 
  • Brief the executive team: Write papers for internal governance to effect change to the control framework to respond better to risks or improve the performance of the function.  
  • Project management: Respond to regulatory initiatives by providing leadership and direction for new projects to adhere to our obligations.
  • Strategic insight: Be a resource for knowledge and understanding internally in order to make good judgements around regulatory obligations, audits, regulatory engagement, compliance risks and business development.  
  • Ensure team success: Support team managers and have an oversight role for the front line operational staff involved with on-boarding new customers and ongoing account monitoring of crypto and fiat activity.  

 

Required qualifications:

  • Minimum 4 years experience working in financial crime, crypto, compliance or financial regulation.
  • Management experience - preferably at least 3 years.
  • Specific experience in undertaking financial crime prevention (AML/CTF, sanctions, fraud, investigations, transaction monitoring) and law enforcement liaison 
  • Project management experience, ideally in the compliance space
  • Experience writing policy papers and reports, managing committees and supporting senior leaders’ work
  • Credible stakeholder engagement skills
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously on tight deadlines
  • Ability to work independently with a high level of responsibility
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience designing/documenting policies, procedures and presentations
  • Fluent written and oral English skills

 

Bonus if you have:

  • Previous experience working at a Fintech company, even better if you have experience in crypto or at the regulator
  • Additional European languages, specifically Portuguese or French
  • Experience writing SQL and communicating the results
  • Professional qualifications such as ACAMS, ICA etc.
  • Fluency in cryptocurrencies or other digital assets as they are core to our business
