Launched in 2019, Public has been trusted with billions in assets of affluent investors. Headquartered in New York City, it’s raised over $400M from investors like Accel and Tiger Global. The Role We’re looking for a Technical Accounting Manager or Senior Manager to join our Finance team at Public, depending on experience. In this role, you’ll take ownership of key technical areas—diving into complex accounting topics, supporting equity-related transactions, and helping shape our accounting policies as we scale. You’ll play a hands-on role in the monthly close process and work closely with our auditors to support annual audit activities through preparation of documentation and technical analysis. You’ll also get involved in ad hoc projects ranging from implementing new accounting standards to advising on special transactions and cross-functional initiatives. If you’re someone who enjoys solving challenging accounting problems, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and wants to help build a strong, modern finance function, we’d love to meet you! What You’ll Do
Serve as the subject matter expert on U.S. GAAP and technical accounting issues across the organization. Work with an external advisory firm to research and evaluate the accounting treatment for complex transactions, including equity-related activities (e.g., stock compensation, convertible instruments, warrant accounting, business combination, etc.). Support external reporting and audit processes by reviewing the technical documentation prepared by the advisory firm and providing audit-ready materials. Collaborate cross-functionally with legal, FP&A, product, and operations teams to assess accounting implications of new products and strategic initiatives. Contribute to the monthly close process, including preparing and reviewing journal entries and reconciliations. Actively participate in the development, enhancement, and enforcement of internal accounting policies and controls. Act as the accounting lead on tax-related projects, coordinating closely with external tax advisors and internal stakeholders. Serve as a resource to the broader accounting team for complex or non-routine matters.
Who You Are
5+ years of relevant experience in a Big 4 or equivalent public accounting firm (assurance or advisory services). Deep knowledge of U.S. GAAP, especially in areas such as revenue recognition, equity, and financial instruments. Proven experience researching and analyzing complex accounting issues independently. Exposure to corporate accounting operations and understanding of the full-cycle monthly close process. Willingness to be hands-on, with a strong sense of ownership and attention to detail. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical concepts to non-accountants. CPA license required.
Bonus Points
Experience working in a high-growth start-up. Familiarity with ERP systems (e.g., NetSuite) and accounting operation tools (BILL, Aleph, etc.).
