Web3 Research Associate

Position Description

The Digital, Data, and Design (D^3) Institute at Harvard is looking for multiple energetic Research Associates (RAs) to drive research activities at our newly formed research labs. D^3 will have a formal launch in July 2022 with 10 newly minted labs that will provide cutting edge research faced by academics and practitioners. The RAs will work under the direct supervision of a Lab Manager at each lab. The RAs will also work closely with Harvard Business School faculty and D^3 core and platform staff. D^3 is looking for candidates with diverse backgrounds and/or new perspectives.

The Crypto, Fintech, and Web3 Lab, led by Professors Shai Bernstein and Marco Di Maggio, is seeking two quantitative Research Associates. The Crypto, Fintech and Web3 Lab will focus on a host of topics related to blockchain, digital currencies, and fintech. This position is ideal for candidates with an interest in economics or finance who have plans for doctoral studies after working as an RA for two years.

Duties

• Collect, clean, synthesize, and analyze data. Produce statistical models. Provide analysis of data exhibits for academic journal articles.
• Create and maintain documentation of data files, modeling choices, rationale, and results;
• Provide statistical analysis and design for reports and presentations;
• Evaluate new crypto protocols;
• Independently manage all timelines and deliverables. Exercise independent decision making with regard to progression of research project and methodologies;
• Coordinate research tasks with the lab's academic partners and faculty internally at Harvard and at other research institutions as well as with companies;
• Responsible for other duties as assigned.
  

Basic Qualifications

• B.A. or B.S., and 2-5 years relevant experience
• Statistical/programming experience and/or applied experience with large datasets in Python and/or R
• Willingness to problem solve and open to learning new skills as required
  

Additional Qualifications And Skills

Demonstrated experience as an analyst, consultant, or programmer strongly preferred. Strong quantitative skills and economic background are essential. Interest in economics of blockchain, fintech, and/or crypto is helpful. Programming experience in Solidity useful, but not required.

Evidence of outstanding academic achievement. Indication of independent research experience and/or applied experience. Methodological interests in econometrics, statistics, machine learning, industrial organization, productivity, and economic theory are preferred. Must be able to take complex research ideas, concepts, and methodologies and apply them to new projects and situations. Abilities to use own judgement, structure assignments, and keep faculty members informed are a must.

Excellent communication, interpersonal, organization, research, analytical, writing, and editing skills are required. Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously and to adapt to changes in priorities; ability to work calmly under deadline pressure, work both independently and as a team member, take initiative; and follow projects through to completion.

Additional Information

This is a full-time term appointments starting as soon as possible through June 30, 2023, with the possibility of renewal based on funding and performance. All Research Associate roles at HBS are structured as term appointments. There is strong potential for reappointment, and a preference for candidates willing to commit for two or more years.

This role is offered as a hybrid (some combination of onsite and remote) where you are required to be onsite at our Boston, MA based campus. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.
