About the Team:

The Orb Backend team is responsible for the portion of the system that orb devices around the world communicate with. We work closely with the ML team on handling biometrics and sensory data and collaborate with consumer and crypto teams on our constant push towards decentralization and privacy. The challenges in our space relate to global distribution and multi-region architecture, we own the identity verification components which check user’s uniqueness against our data sets, that is a very hard problem and requires high parallelization and distributing computation over many workers. We also set standards and infrastructure patterns for the entire organization. We work in a light process, we try to be agile not do agile. We’re looking for likeminded people who are self-sufficient and have a builder’s mentality.

About the Opportunity:

As the Engineering Manager for the Orb Backend, you will significantly grow the current development team and systems, including user signup, over-the-air device updates, fraud prevention, monitoring, and data collection. This role includes extensive cross-functional collaboration with the AI and the on-device Orb Software teams including several of the founding team members of Worldcoin. Scaling the Orb Backend team as well as the teams scope is vital to the success of Worldcoin.

In this role you will:

• Design, develop, and deploy the backend infrastructure that powers Orbs
• Recruit and mentor engineers
• Drive cross-functional feature gathering
• Facilitate architecture alignment on a technical level
• Operate in an environment of high autonomy
• Focused execution of the problems of highest leverage
• Keep raising the security bar and manage security audits
• Create and maintain the team’s roadmap in collaboration with both your team and other teams
• Own delivery and process for the team
• Maintain transparency towards other teams
• Possibly help build further teams supporting the Orb

About You:

• You have led teams that shipped critical infrastructure, particularly in the security, connectivity, and monitoring domains
• You have successfully recruited and scaled a team from the ground up, or significantly grown an established team.
• You have worked with geographically distributed teams
• You work very well cross-functionally and are able to think rigorously, communicate effectively, and make hard decisions and tradeoffs
• You thrive on a high level of autonomy and responsibility, and have the ability to dig into technical details to inform decisions
• You are creative, solution-oriented, and thrive in a rapidly changing, occasionally ambiguous environment
• You enjoy working as part of a fast-moving team, where perfectionism can sometimes be at odds with pragmatism.
• You are OK to do hands-on development work in the beginning up to 50% of your time. This can decrease to 0 as the team grows.
• You have at least 1 years of software engineering management experience
• Optimally, you are familiar with Go, Typescript, Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, MongoDB, AWS infrastructure and with services like S3, EKS, EC2
• You have a methodical quantitative and analytical background
