The Block is looking for an innovative Head of Communications who thinks outside of the box and is excited about building a function from the ground up for a growing business that is at the epicenter of the ever-evolving crypto and digital asset space. The Head of Communications is a new role on The Block’s growing marketing team and will be responsible for creating, managing, and executing all strategic communications and PR strategies for the business, and will report to the Executive Vice President of Marketing. Laser-focused on synthesizing and amplifying The Block’s growth story and company priorities internally and externally, this role is perfect for a charismatic storyteller, orator, and writer who thrives in fast-paced environments. 

Responsibilities:

    • Develop and implement an integrated strategic communications plan that utilizes unique tactics to tell The Block’s story and advance our brand identity
    • Create a differentiated public relations strategy that cultivates and fosters meaningful relationships with influential audiences, including the media and key influencers
    • Serve as a spokesperson and lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization
    • Work with internal SMEs and external firms to develop insights that create sharp thought leadership that drives the conversation
    • Own the day-to-day PR agency relationship including coaching them to be fluent in our messaging and communication strategy
    • Proactively collaborate with stakeholders across the leadership team and larger organization with the goal of driving creative, streamlined and connected messaging and communication strategies
    • Build strategies to leverage and develop the profiles of the executive team, key high-profile internal talent across social media, industry awards and press
    • Develop a roster of internal spokespeople to serve as key messengers for critical presentations and interviews by providing context, media training, speaking points, responses, and other support as needed
    • Identify challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization and make recommendations for messaging and positioning that reframes the challenge and owns the narrative
    • Paint a vision for the leadership team on the value of an internal communications strategy and what it might look like at The Block 
    • Help develop unique ways to highlight and gain media interest in high-profile, often bespoke, client engagements

Qualifications:

    • Minimum 10 years of experience in a leadership role either in-house or with an agency.
    • Exceptional written and verbal communications skills; a natural storytelling talent along with the ability to write pithy and persuasive copy across mediums 
    • Demonstrated skill in proactively cultivating relationships with top-tier journalists and influencers, and in successfully positioning subject matter with the media to achieve high-impact placements
    • Extensive writing and editing experience (externally focused) with a variety of media - especially in the finance and/or technology industry
    • Strong interest in becoming crypto fluent 
    • Demonstrated experience and leadership in managing a comprehensive strategic communications and media relations program while working alongside marketing to advance an organization’s mission and goals.
    • Ability to make quick decisions in a changing environment and anticipate future needs
    • Creative and thoughtful on how new media technologies can be utilized
    • Innovative thinker, with a track record for translating strategic thinking into action plans  
    • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or related field

The following are not required, but are nice to have:

    • Strong familiarity with or fluency in crypto 
    • Policy communications background and experience 
    • Prior experience at a financial technology company
