The Role
We are looking for a Portfolio Compensation Partner to join the team in San Francisco or Menlo Park. The Compensation Partner will be a part of our People Practices team with a focus on supporting our portfolio companies on topics related to compensation. You will be partnering closely with our People Practices Partners to generate data, insight and points of view related to a variety of compensation topics that will be distributed to General Partners and key stakeholders in our portfolio companies.
This role requires an in-office presence, as needed by the business, in our Menlo Park, CA or San Francisco, CA office.

- Use your knowledge of market data to stay informed on key changes in the compensation for broad-based and executive employees
- Use your strong analytical foundation to simplify complex concepts including job leveling, role mapping and data collection into practical outcomes
- Participate in the development of dynamic dashboards and tools to represent current and longitudinal data trends
- Analyze data and trends to develop key insights on issues that our portfolio companies are facing in a competitive labor market
- Support the People Practices team in enhancing content and points of view on core topics related to compensation (building compensation ranges, leveling roles, best practices in market data collection) based on stage of growth and size of company
- Work across our verticals with a focus on our Crypto and Web3 portfolio companies
- Design and Lead Crypto-Specific Compensation Initiatives: Develop and execute comprehensive crypto-specific intelligence, providing actionable insights for portfolio companies to remain competitive in the rapidly evolving crypto and Web3 talent markets
- Advance Thought Leadership in Compensation for Crypto: Partner with the People Practices team to publish high-impact research and insights on cutting-edge trends in crypto compensation, refreshers, token mechanics and establish a16z as a leader in the compensation strategy space for Web3 and blockchain-focused organizations
- Communicate effectively with key partners at all levels as you engage with our portfolio company leaders and a16z General Partners and leaders
Minimum Qualifications
- 4-6 years of compensation consulting experience specifically in building total rewards solutions for high growth companies supporting analysis on executive compensation, including base salary, total cash compensation and token and equity grant strategies
- Must have prior experience consulting, preferably to start-up and high growth companies
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to use data to build dynamic models that will drive insight into changing market trends, preferably specific to compensation survey best practices
- Strong attention to detail, organization, and the highest standards for accuracy and precision
- Ability to develop effective relationships at all levels of the organization and inspire trust and confidence
- Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion; maintain confidentiality
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to manage stakeholder expectations
- Ability to work effectively with ambiguity, manage multiple projects through completion on time, and to prioritize in a rapidly changing environment
- Growth mindset, sense of curiosity and dedication to the team's success
- Comfortable working with Salesforce, Looker, as well as other business reporting tools
- Low ego, high empathy, and the capacity to collaborate effectively with diverse teams
The anticipated salary range for this role is between $173,000 - $202,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.
This role is eligible to participate in the a16z carry program and various discretionary bonus programs as well as benefit and perquisite plans including health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401K plan, vacation, and sick leave.
