Who Were Looking For
The Recording Academy is seeking a passionate and strategic leader to oversee the Academy's advocacy and public policy efforts, representing the interests of music creators and the overall music ecosystem of the performers, musicians, songwriters, and studio professionals represented by the Recording Academy before Congress, the Executive Branch, state legislatures and other governmental agencies. The Chief Advocacy Officer reports to the Academy's CEO and will be responsible for shaping strategy and delivery in this key area in support of the organization's mission.
What Youll Do

  • Lead global, national and local advocacy strategy and direction for the Academy and work in close partnership with the affiliates, including MusiCares, Latin Recording Academy, GRAMMY Museum, and GRAMMY Global Ventures
  • Manage an advocacy office and team based in Washington, D.C.
  • Collaborate effectively with Elected Officials, Elected Leaders of the Academy, Members, and key stakeholders to accelerate key advocacy outcomes
  • Create strategies and deliver measurable results focused on creators' rights in the digital landscape
  • Serve as a thought leader and speaker in the industry, representing the Academy at conferences, roundtables, symposiums, and music industry events throughout the year.
  • Representation of Academy membership before Congress, including lobbying, attending stakeholder meetings, and hearings
  • Identify key issues and develop policy recommendations, priorities, and strategies
  • Manage communication with federal and state legislatures, members, trustees, and media
  • Work closely with governmental agencies that impact Academy membership to advance creators' rights
  • Organize outreach campaigns with local, state, and federal officials and lead industry-coalitions
  • Work directly with the board of trustees, advocacy, and strategic planning committees
  • Produce industry-leading events in Washington, D.C., the annual GRAMMYs on the Hill, GRAMMY Week congressional briefings, and District Advocate Day
  • Oversee the Academy's political action committee, including compliance, fundraising, and giving strategy
  • Responsible for managing the departmental budget
  • Moderate travel required

Skills & Experience
  • Minimum of 12-15 years of experience working on Capitol Hill or closely with Congress.
  • Experience with Judiciary Committees preferred.
  • Excellent relations with congressional staff from both parties.
  • Expertise in copyright law and related I.P. issues.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficient and well-versed in new technologies such as blockchain, immersive experiences, NFT, cryptocurrencies, tokens, etc. and their prospective impact on creator and rights holder remuneration.
  • Detailed and thorough understanding of mechanical and performance royalty calculation, collection, and distribution on a global basis, across platforms, services, media, and technologies.
  • Must have proven presentation skills, be very detail-oriented, and possess exceptional interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality and use discretion regarding Academy advocacy matters.
  • Ability and willingness to work extended hours during peak periods.
  • Four-year college degree in a related field (public policy, music business, etc.). A Law degree is strongly desired.
