We are looking for a highly qualified Legal Counsel to oversee the legal aspects of our business. You will safeguard our reputation by guaranteeing that the company strictly follows law guidelines and give legal advice to management about all relevant issues.

The role

The successful candidate will effectively ensure legal conformity and minimise probability of exposure. The Legal Counsel will take ownership of core corporate and commercial matters, including contracts, terms and conditions, and litigations for the Company group-wide, while working closely with the rest of the Legal Team on in-house matters.

Wirex operates in a context which is more complex than is usual for financial institutions, given the application of its activities. The position of Legal Counsel is pivotal to our rapidly expanding business, therefore, requires a proactive and versatile approach to providing solutions. Consequently, excellent judgment is required as is the ability to navigate a complex in-house legal landscape.

Key responsibilities of the role:

  • Protect and enhance Wirex’s endeavours, objectives and reputation by providing timely and appropriate legal services;
  • Draft and negotiate agreements, contracts, terms and conditions and other legal documents to ensure the company’s full legal rights;
  • Deal with complex matters with multiple stakeholders and forces;
  • Litigations and customer disputes;
  • Internal administration to ensure the department is organized and operating efficiently;
  • Data protection advice and guidance to the business and key stakeholders;
  • Corporate governance;
  • Drive a culture of professional excellence and agility, as well providing visible and effective leadership of the team through a period of change;
  • Provide clarification on legal language or specifications;
  • Conduct your work with integrity and responsibility;
  • Maintain current knowledge of alterations in legislation;
  • Provide high quality legal input as required;
  • Coordinate the responses to litigation or any potential legal challenges;
  • Oversight and management of external legal advisers ensuring delivery and value for money; and
  • Act as an ambassador for Wirex.

Skills and experience required:

  • LLB, JD or equivalent degree required
  • An experienced lawyer with at least 3 years PQE, with knowledge of corporate governance, financial services, and regulatory law (an advantage, but not essential) acquired both in private practice and in-house.
  • MA or BSc in Business Administration is a plus.
  • An experienced and qualified legal professional who has experience in working in a complex legal function and managing change and a track record in building strong relationships with key stakeholders
  • Well versed in all aspects of commercial, corporate and employment law, with extensive general counseling experience in business environments, with an in-depth understanding of how legal issues affect organisations.
  • A good understanding of financial services and the main components of business activity envisaged for Wirex as well as the bigger picture such as political pressures and the company’s development objectives.
  • Team leader experience, with the ability to be able to manage, motivate and direct a small team.
  • High degree of professional ethics, integrity and gravitas.
  • Excellent judgement and analytical skills.
  • Ability to anticipate legal issues or risks and to “see around the corner”.
  • Able to work across multiple jurisdictions
  • Strong organizational and leadership skills
  • Excellent attention to detail with ability to prioritise key issues
  • Ability to work efficiently to tight deadlines
  • In-house, fast-paced experience
  • Fintech, crypto-asset, or general financial experience preferred
