Our mission

We are Toco, a company driven by a passion to combat climate change by revolutionising archaic aspects of the global financial system. Our mission is to create a new era of environmental consciousness and action through the introduction of Tocos, a groundbreaking carbon currency. Tocos represents one tonne of carbon dioxide that has been removed from the atmosphere, giving individuals and businesses a tangible way to offset their carbon footprint and contribute to a sustainable future.

At Toco, we believe that traditional political and economic structures have fallen short in addressing the urgent climate crisis. Our innovative approach breaks free from the limitations of the past and empowers people to take climate action into their own hands. By uniting as a civil community, we can redefine the nature of money, challenge conventions, and lead the way where others have failed.

Our digital currency is constructed to ensure transparency, security, and scalability for our users. Through a user-friendly digital platform, individuals can easily convert their earnings into Tocos, transforming their economic wealth into a powerful store of environmental value. This not only accelerates carbon reduction efforts but also creates a vibrant marketplace where carbon assets can be exchanged, valued, and invested in, all while driving positive environmental impact.

With Tocos, we aim to disrupt the status quo, increase demand for carbon reduction, and facilitate a seamless transition towards a sustainable economy. By embracing Tocos, individuals, organisations, and businesses can actively participate in the fight against climate change, unlocking new opportunities for environmental wealth while creating a better future for all.

Join us in this exciting journey as we revolutionise finance and empower global citizens to make a real difference. Together, we can forge a path towards a greener, more sustainable world.

Our tech culture

The culture is built around transparency, trust and extreme candour. Our way of working embraces “work-from-anywhere” and responsible leave (i.e. be responsible and take as much leave as you need) whilst encouraging people to have fun and extract meaning from their work; being aligned to the purpose of the company is extremely important to us.

We are a product led company with cross functional teams. From an engineering perspective we want our engineers to be full stack and supported by a platform engineering team to optimise their developer experience and productivity. Lots of trust is extended to engineers to let them grow, experiment, be creative, make mistakes and learn from these. We prefer small teams and aim to keep a very high bar when hiring engineers; we expect engineers both senior and junior to be deep thinkers, adept problem solvers, customer focused, investment minded and know how and when to take a pragmatic vs purist approach.

Position overview

We're looking for a seasoned principal engineer to setup and lead our Platform Engineering team. This role is crucial to the success of our company, as you will ensure the stability, quality, velocity and security of our technology and product while supporting the growth and scaling of our technical capabilities. Strong leadership and strategic planning abilities are essential as is a willingness to get your hands dirty solving difficult technical problems under pressure. We encourage candidates who have experience building a tech startup using modern technology stacks, a preference for open-source and who are passionate about using technology to combat the climate crisis.

The role is remote and candidates can be based 4 hours either side of Central European Time. The candidate will report into the CTO.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Platform Engineering Strategy and Planning:
    • Develop and execute a comprehensive platform engineering strategy aligned with the company's growth plans and business objectives.
    • Define the core outcomes of platform engineering, including velocity and stability, and establish clear goals and metrics, including the DORA metrics, to measure success.
    • Prioritise the efficiency and speed of CI/CD processes to maximise development velocity.
    • Adopt a "platform as a product" mindset, treating internal users of the platform as customers and implementing practices such as continuous sprint reviews/demos, customer surveys, and customer listening to ensure the platform meets their needs.

    2. Infrastructure Management
    • Design and implement scalable and reliable infrastructure solutions in a declarative manner on cloud infrastructure to support our business needs.

    3. SRE, and Incident Management:
    • Provide great tooling to engineers to extensively instrument our infrastructure and applications at all levels for proactive monitoring and easy debugging.
    • Establish and maintain site reliability engineering practices, including incident management and incident response processes. This includes developing incident classification standards, defining service level objectives (SLOs) and establishing call rosters and escalation procedures for effective incident handling.
    • Continuously monitor alerting rules to maximise incident coverage while minimising false positives.
    • Foster a culture of blameless incident handling, conducting detailed post-mortems to learn from incidents and improve future incident response.

    4. Test Automation and Tooling:
    • Provide robust test automation frameworks and tooling to enable teams to easily conduct the full spectrum of tests, including unit tests, integration tests, contract tests, UI tests, and end-to-end tests.
    • Establish the necessary tooling and environments to support efficient and effective testing processes across the organisation and support them as they learn to integrate tooling in CI/CD pipelines.

    5. Build vs Buy Decisions and Open Source Solutions:
    • Make informed decisions regarding build vs buy, as well as selecting between deploying hosted open source solutions or building custom solutions, considering the regulated financial nature of the product operating at scale across multiple countries.
    • Evaluate and select appropriate commercial products, open source solutions, and cloud services to meet platform engineering needs, balancing cost, scalability, security, and regulatory requirements.
    • Foster a culture of innovation and experimentation, encouraging the team to explore new technologies and approaches while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and security standards.

    6. Team Leadership and Collaboration:
    • Build and lead a high-performing platform engineering team, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and excellence.
    • Hire, mentor, and develop technical talent, providing guidance and support for professional growth and career development.
    • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including software engineering, security, product management, and operations, to align platform engineering strategies with overall business objectives.
    • Establish and maintain strong relationships with external vendors, partners, and service providers to ensure seamless integration of systems and technologies.

Technology and tooling

Platform engineering at the company is in its infancy so there is not a deep commitment to any toolchain. Not all of the below are in use, but familiarity with such tooling or similar tools will be considered valuable:

  • Ideally AWS as it’s currently the cloud we are deployed on, but alternatively deep familiarity with GCP or Azure
  • Terraform, Docker, Kubernetes, ECS, EKS, ArgoCD or similar tools
  • OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana, Cloudwatch, etc
  • Github Actions, Gitlab CI/CD, Jenkins, etc
  • Jest, Mocha, Selenium, Pact, etc
  • TypeScript, Java, Rust, Python (not all needed but these are the languages currently in use across the stack)

Process

The process will include:

  1. Interview with CTO
  2. Technical interview with senior engineers
  3. Take home case study assignment
  4. Review of case study discussion
  5. Final interview with other founders including CEO
  6. Offer
