What will you do

• Work independently and directly with internal Engineers and external academics and experts to help gather knowledge, and identify leading-edge solutions for Product integration.
• Undertake research, review, and build design or build prototypes from new or existing scientific papers.
• Develop and identify new knowledge in topics around HPC, distributed compute, cluster computing, confidential compute, cryptography, distributed storage, blockchain technologies, and cloud computing.
• Design and build prototypes taking advantage of this research and hand off the Production development to the Engineering teams.
• Partner with the CTO, CIO, and Head of Product to identify new opportunities, and key research topics and deliver findings, designs, and prototypes.
• Partner with external research organizations and work with public institutions to further research and funding.
• Work with the Head of people to improve external developer relations, and present at conferences and give talks.
• Provide coordination support on partner and investor relations
• Contribute to the creation and development of a diverse and inclusive culture across the organization, collaborating across departments. 
• Undertake any reasonable work that is e required from time to time. 

What you bring to the table

• A Ph.D. in Computer Science or closely related field
• Has held a senior research position previously and has extensive industry experience
• Experience of scoping and undertaking high-quality, rapid research in a computer science-related science field
• Strong ability to draw out messages from complex evidence, present them to a lay audience in plain English and author compelling reports and findings.
• Experience of working independently to identify innovative, diverse sources of quantitative and qualitative data and intelligence. Understands and presents the limitations of that data. 
• Experience of presenting to a diversity of audiences, ranging from senior management, external technical experts, policy professionals, and wider teams of non-experts.
• Comfortable working with technical and scientific information 
• Experience working for a company that runs a SaaS, PaaS, has a Production environment or has designed or developed and operated large-scale infrastructure services.
• Experience in one or several of these: HPC, distributed compute, cluster computing, confidential compute, cryptography, distributed storage, blockchain technologies, and cloud computing.
• Experience of project management including planning, resourcing, monitoring, and reporting
• Are self-driven and motivated, with a strong work ethic and a passion for problem-solving

• Demonstrates creativity and critical thinking when designing and delivering research and recommendations
• Highly capable communicator, listens carefully, clearly sharing information (written and verbal), and can persuade and influence others, establishing positive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders

• Excellent judgment in determining the appropriate level of quality in their work. 
• Recognizes the importance of diligence and precision, whilst also knowing when to balance that with when the output is good enough for its purpose.
• Excellent people skills with the ability to establish, build and maintain healthy relationships with diverse stakeholders at all levels of the organization.

• Able and willing to learn more, develop skills and fill gaps in knowledge, and to support others in doing the same.

Bonus points

• You understand cloud platforms architecture.
• Has worked for a Global Cloud provider, especially with a US customer base
• You have experience designing and building infrastructure technology solutions
• Had your research integrated into successful products or widely recognized by the Computer Science community in a specific domain
• You have patents that are currently used in production solutions
• Has led a small research or development team
• Has been part of a successful launch, IPO, acquisition
