Our Financial Crimes Compliance team is responsible for ensuring compliance with local laws and regulations in the countries where we operate.
Crypto.com is seeking an experienced and well-versed blockchain expert to join our Financial Crimes team as a Blockchain Investigator. This role will assist the Head of Investigations and the VP of Compliance by levering timely and accurate information derived from complex blockchain-driven investigations to update controls and mitigate risks. The successful candidate will utilize blockchain expertise to update and maintain internal controls, provide ad-hoc investigative support to global MLROs, conduct OSINT checks, develop presentation decks, and provide other insights as needed to support the regional MLROs and the US BSA Officer as needed.
About the Role
The Blockchain Investigator, Financial Crimes role will be hybrid if in one of our hub-cities or remote and report to the VP of Compliance.
This role focuses on executing advanced and specialized on-chain investigations, mitigating regulatory risk, and preparing SAR filings to identify, report and prevent financial crimes within the cryptocurrency ecosystem. As a core member of the compliance organization, this investigator will leverage blockchain analytics and threat intelligence to identify, assess, and disrupt sophisticated illicit network typologies and support global MLRO teams with an emphasis on North America clients (US & Canada).
Responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Proactive Typology/Risk Identification: Be at the forefront of risk identification by proactively identifying exposure to illicit typologies, such as potential sanctions evasion, money laundering and scams. Evaluate external threat intelligence referrals.
- Advanced Blockchain Investigations: Document and map complex illicit networks and trace illicit funds through blockchain networks by using blockchain analytics tools like Chainalysis or TRM Labs.
- Global Risk Management: Work with global MLROs to provide investigative support and relevant insights to ensure case completion.
- Interdiction: Evaluate suspected wallet addresses against established fraud typologies to make data-driven blacklisting decisions and maintain interdiction controls.
- Transaction Monitoring Controls: Conduct reviews of transaction monitoring controls and rules to confirm their accuracy and comprehensive effectiveness.
- Digital Assets Reviews: Review digital asset listings to provide potential risk insights. Exhibit and present an understanding of on-chain exchange infrastructure.
- Law Enforcement Support: Liaise, as appropriate, between law enforcement and internal stakeholders to support anti-financial crimes initiatives. Support regulatory inter-agency frameworks and on-chain controls related to FinCEN Section 314(b) processes, global sanctions compliance, and FinCEN 311-related restrictions.
- Training: Train, as needed, other members of the Financial Crimes team on advanced blockchain investigatory techniques, evolution in typologies and new threats.
Requirements
- 3+ years related experience in Blockchain Analytics, Financial Crimes Investigations, AML Compliance, Transaction Monitoring, etc.
- Strong understanding of crypto-specific financial crime threats, including familiarity with movement of funds on UTXO and account-based networks, job/investment scams, and cross-border fraud networks.
- Proven expertise utilizing on-chain forensics platforms and tools (e.g., Chainalysis, TRM Labs). Chainalysis, TRM Labs, and/or Elliptic certifications preferred.
- Working familiarity with digital asset compliance standards and regulations, including the PATRIOT ACT and FinCEN 311/314(b) guidelines and global sanctions regimes.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to translate complex crypto and compliance issues for both technical and non-technical audiences.
