GPT-4 Short overview

OpenAI has developed GPT-4, a large multimodal deep learning model that accepts both image and text inputs and outputs text. Although it is not as capable as humans in many real-world situations, GPT-4 demonstrates human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks. For example, it scored in the top 10% on a simulated bar exam, whereas its predecessor, GPT-3.5, scored in the bottom 10%. The team spent six months fine-tuning GPT-4 using insights from adversarial testing and ChatGPT to improve its accuracy, steerability, and adherence to safety guidelines.

Over the past two years, OpenAI has rebuilt its entire deep learning stack and co-designed a supercomputer with Azure to handle their workload. GPT-3.5 was trained a year ago to test the system and improve its theoretical foundations. With the bugs fixed and the methodology refined, GPT-4 was trained with unprecedented stability, making it the first large model with accurately predicted training performance. The team is focusing on reliable scaling and plans to refine their methodology to predict future capabilities far in advance for safety purposes.

The text input capability of GPT-4 is now available through ChatGPT and the API with a waitlist, while the image input capability is being prepared for wider availability through a single partner. OpenAI Evals, a framework for automated evaluation of AI model performance, has been open-sourced to enable users to report any deficiencies in their models and guide further improvements.
