Litigation Associate
Riot is one of the world’s largest public Bitcoin mining companies operating today. Riot’s strategic focus is to be a vertically integrated Bitcoin mining company, and its operations include large scale data center and infrastructure development, electrical engineering and manufacturing, and Bitcoin mining operations. Riot is actively expanding and improving its Bitcoin mining operations through innovation, expansion and procurement, including large-scale expansion of its Texas-based mining and hosting facilities, and its legal team plays a vital role in every aspect of the Company’s development and operational efforts.

About this role:
In this role, you will collaborate with existing internal and external counsel, as well as non-legal team members to oversee current litigation matters, assess litigation risk across our organization, and advise the General Counsel to help deliver favorable outcomes and reduce the organization’s legal risk. The Litigation Associate will serve as a member of our in-house legal team and will report directly to our Deputy General Counsel. This is a remote or hybrid position, ideally with the ability to report to our Austin, Texas, area corporate offices.
Essential Functions:
- Oversee external litigation counsel;
- Review and analyze draft filings, communications and other documentation prepared by external counsel in connection with current and potential litigation matters;
- Oversee discovery response and records preservation;
- Assist with the development and upkeep of Riot’s risk management functions; and
- Competently and professionally communicate litigation updates to company business and legal leadership
Secondary Functions:
- Provide thorough factual and legal research and analysis on emergent legal developments affecting Riot’s business;
- Assist the Deputy General Counsel on labor and employment matters;
- Assist with commercial contract drafting and management; and
- Assist other members of the in-house counsel team to deliver solutions to emergent legal and business matters on an as-needed basis.
Key skills, education, and experience:
- You have a Juris Doctorate from an accredited US law school and are licensed to practice law in at least one US jurisdiction;
- You have at least three years’ experience in the practice of law in a high-quality law firm or in-house environment, with a principal focus in commercial litigation (particular emphasis on commercial contracts litigation, as well as experiencing litigating over engineering, procurement and construction contracts);
- You are familiar with the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure;
- Adaptability and attention to detail;
- Ability to work with a team of attorneys and team members to develop strategies for various business situations;
- First or second chair litigation experience, or experience as the principal attorney on a file;
- Team attitude that no job is too big or too small;
- Thrives in an environment where you need to roll-up your sleeves and own outcomes;
- Ability to strike sensible and practical balance between legal risks and the need to do business; and
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
