Plai Labs is seeking a lead architect to shape our consumer mobile experience powered by AI and ML - PlaiDay. As the Lead Architect, you'll provide technical leadership, drive backend system architecture, and solve complex problems 50% of the time, and hands-on coding the other 50% of the time. We're looking for someone with 7+ years of Python experience, strong experience developing large scale distributed applications, strong DevOps skills, a passion for scalability, and can thrive in a collaborative team setting.

Our tech stack and other engineering tools include, but are not limited to:
- React Native frontend, TypeScript
- Python / Django backend
- Celery, Redis and GCP Pub Sub Queuing
- Pytorch ML backend
- Postgres as our database
- Gitlab for code review and CI
- Deployment to GCP

Responsibilities:

    • Design and lead the implementation of the overall technical architecture and backend systems.
    • Provide engineering leadership, mentorship, technical direction to a small team of other engineers (3-6 members).
    • Design, develop, and implement distributed queueing and messaging systems. 
    • Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimizing data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
    • Conduct architecture reviews, ensuring adherence to design principles, patterns, and coding standards.
    • Collaborate with the QA team to define testing strategies for high-quality, bug-free mobile applications.
    • Developing and maintaining cloud-based infrastructure (GCP), including container orchestration, auto-scaling, monitoring, and logging.
    • Optimize and fine-tune the middle-tier architecture to ensure efficient data processing, seamless integration with external services, and optimal resource utilization.
    • Work closely with the database team to design and maintain the database schema and optimize query performance.
    • Write clean and well-documented code that follows industry best practices.

Minimum Qualifications:

    • 8+ years of experience in architecting and building complex systems.
    • 3+ years in a technical leadership role, mentoring others, and defining technical roadmaps.
    • Extensive experience as a Middle Tier Architect or a similar role, with a strong focus on Django and Python.
    • Proficient in developing RESTful APIs and web services using Django REST Framework.
    • Solid understanding of software architecture principles and design patterns.
    • Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL and GCP Spanner.
    • Experience with Docker and Kubernetes.
    • Proficient in Google Cloud Platform (GCP), GCP Compute, Cloud Storage, IAM Security, and other GCP services.
    • Familiarity with Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
    • Hands-on experience with large scale distributed database systems, such as PostgreSQL or GCP Spanner, and efficient in writing efficient SQL queries.
    • Experience developing, deploying, and maintaining dev, staging, and integration environments, implementing CI/CD following industry best practices.
    • Experience working with mobile application development teams and understanding the unique challenges of mobile app backends.
    • Excellent communication skills, a proactive mindset and a willingness to take ownership of projects.

Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience with Celery/Redis or other task processing and message queuing tools.
    • Advanced skills with Django and PostgreSQL.
    • Familiarity with machine learning algorithms and AI principles.
    • Experience in mobile application backend development iOS Proficiency in modern DevOps tools and methodologies.
