The Department: Platform Security
The Role: Director, Platform Security
Gemini takes a cloud-first approach to our services, platforms, and vendors, allowing the organization to continue scaling with hypergrowth hiring, innovative product development, and demanding customer needs. To achieve that scale securely, Gemini has a dedicated Platform Security team whose mission is to enable the business to achieve secure-by-design architectures, implement best-in-class security technologies, and help our engineering partners to achieve security success easily & confidently. To further that mission, weâre looking for a new leader to join the existing team to take our vision, strategy, internal partnerships, business alignment, & technical expertise to the next stage of maturity. At Gemini, our best leaders lead from the trenchesâwe need this Director to remain hands-on, contributing code and technical solutions alongside their team as needed to unblock work, maintain technical context, and lead by example.
This role is required to be in person twice a week at either our San Francisco, CA or New York City, NY office.
Responsibilities:
- Strategic and technical leadership of Gemini's Platform Security team
- Align team-wide strategy with the needs of the business, internal partners, & peer Security leadership
- Enable the ongoing success & growth of the team through creation of hiring plans and hands-on mentorship
- Establish a Platform Security roadmap for initiatives that will provide ever-increasing maturity of capabilities for stakeholders, while also reducing toil through automation
- Foster trust-centric relationships with key partner teams, ensuring that their voices are heard and needs are being met, while achieving excellent security outcomes together
- Lead the development of security policies, procedures, standards, & guidelines that will guide functional security outcomes with all GRC and Audits needs being met
- Determine program KPIs that will meaningfully highlight where weâre succeeding, or falling short of, the mission we aim to accomplish for the business
- Provide guidance through lived-experience and industry awareness on the different approaches to architecture, security engineering, and business-achievement goals
- Define a customer-first process, choosing to provide self-service solutions that minimize friction, create agility, and provide value-oriented ways to solve problems
- Manage relevant third-party vendor relationships, leading the determination of when & why to âbuildâ vs. âbuyâ in response to gaps in capabilities the business may have
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of leadership experience for cloud-native engineering and/or security teams, with a strong preference for Amazon Web Services (AWS)-based organizations
- 10+ years of direct, technical experience in relevant roles (e.g., Platform Engineering, Security)
- Strong experience in AWS, EKS (Kubernetes), IAM, Terraform, GitHub Enterprise Cloud
- Experience leveraging industry security frameworks & standards that act as the basis of maturing the overall security program and enable successful business outcomes
- Comfortable with hiring & scaling a team
- Prior success in leading a team through organizational change management, with a strong preference for start-up experience in a technology-centric business
- Able to easily communicate with technical stakeholders at their level, hearing their feedback and translating those needs or concerns into program-level outcomes
- Pragmatic about security requirements, ignoring âbest practicesâ that donât make sense to the needs of the business by leveraging your teamâs expertise for decision making

Salary Range: The base salary range for this role is between $230,750 - $355,000 in the State of New York, the State of California and the State of Washington. This range is not inclusive of our discretionary bonus or equity package. When determining a candidateâs compensation, we consider a number of factors including skillset, experience, job scope, and current market data.
In the United States, we offer a hybrid work approach at our hub offices, balancing the benefits of in-person collaboration with the flexibility of remote work. Expectations may vary by location and role, so candidates are encouraged to connect with their recruiter to learn more about the specific policy for the role. Employees who do not live near one of our hubs are part of our remote workforce.
