Java Blockchain Engineers - UK and remote-friendly

Location: England United Kingdom

About

Web3 Labs is a leading blockchain technology company.

We develop blockchain software and work with companies to help them succeed with blockchain deployments. Our clients include Microsoft, J.P. Morgan, ConsenSys and R3. Our open source blockchain library Web3j has been downloaded nearly 1 million times, and our Epirus Blockchain Explorer is widely used by enterprises for reporting and supporting their blockchain deployments. In 2020, we were a runner up in Microsoft’s Partner of the year awards too.

The role

We're looking for more Java developers to support some of our upcoming projects. We're looking for experienced Java developers based in Europe or a GMT friendly country to join our team. Working in small teams you'll work closely with our clients on their blockchain projects and deliver increased value to the blockchain community with our software.

Key attributes

  • Demonstrable development track record - active GitHub profiles are great, but we appreciate not everyone gets to work on OSS, so we'll need to understand what you've done previously
  • Great communication skills - you need to be happy to collaborate with your peers and speak with our clients
  • Used to working in an agile environment - we follow an agile methodology for delivery and use continuous delivery pipelines
  • Keen to work with other technologies - although your primary role will entail Java development, you should be just as happy to work with Kotlin and get your hands dirty with deployment pipelines and other challenges that present themselves.
  • Self-starter - we're a remote team, so you need to be very comfortable working remotely and getting the most out of collaboration tools such as Zoom, Slack, Trello.

Technical skills

  • Strong Java skills and ideally good working knowledge of at least one other programming language
  • Java development frameworks such as Spring
  • Blockchain development ideally with Solidity, but also CorDapps or ChainCode.
  • Blockchain platforms ideally Ethereum/ConsenSys Quorum/Hyperledger Besu, but also R3 Corda
  • Familiarity with Web3j will definitely be useful
  • Comfortable working with Docker and ideally Kubernetes too
  • Data storage - SQL and NoSQL based stores
  • Middleware technologies such as RabbitMQ or Kafka
  • Cloud platforms - Azure or AWS

Interview process

  • We run a multi-stage process that involves speaking with all team members to assess your technical abilities and cultural fit in the company
  • You will need to write code - if you've submitted lots of pull requests to public projects, that will certainly make everyone's life easier
  • We don't like to draw things out, we can turn around the process and offers quickly

Culture

  • We strive ourselves on having an awesome culture, we want to provide the optimal environment for our staff to work at their very best, but also support they're own personal needs
  • This includes flexibility on working days or hours around commitments such as family - 2020 has been very challenging for many people and we want to support our staff
  • When life returns to something resembling normal we will meet up in person from time to time
  • We want to ensure our staff get to grow their own profile through the company too, so are supporting of OSS work and love it when they present at conferences and meetups (which we're of course happy to sponsor)

Since COVID-19 we've become a remote team, so are happy to work with people based anywhere in a timezone that overlaps significantly with the UK (Europe, Africa).
