The Role

The primary responsibilities of the Tax Director, Crypto are to (a) oversee and coordinate the outsourced preparation of U.S. federal, state, local, and foreign income tax filings and investor reporting for our Crypto funds and affiliated entities (b) provide tax counsel to deal teams regarding appropriate structuring for investments, operations, and exits, (c) respond to investor inquiries, (d) handle tax controversy matters for the funds and associated legal entities, and (e) conduct ad hoc tax research.

  • Establish the tax positions on investment transactions by collaborating with the Crypto legal and operations teams
  • Create the tax strategy for the protocol to monetize each token
  • Be responsible for managing the tax compliance and investor reporting of the Crypto funds, side vehicles, blocker entities, and general partner entities. Manage our third-party tax preparers through this process
  • Lead the preparation of general partner estimates on a quarterly basis including allocation schedules and respective 704(b) book-ups, as applicable
  • Monitor foreign investments and assist with the analysis of PFICs / CFCs for foreign company investments, as well as other potential international tax issues
  • Play a lead role in analyzing current team processes and collaborate with colleagues to improve upon them with technology and automation
  • Drive ad hoc tax research on issues affecting the Firm and its Funds
  • Stay current on changes in tax laws and regulations related to cryptocurrencies. Provide guidance to Crypto and Tax leadership on how these changes may impact tax consequences to the Firm and its investors
  • Have familiarity with and passion for blockchain technology and cryptocurrency markets and current knowledge of crypto tax regulations and emerging trends in the crypto space
  • Clearly and concisely communicate technical business and tax topics with diverse stakeholders, including Crypto and Tax leadership
  • Advise Crypto leadership on the tax implications of various crypto-related business decisions and transactions
  • Identify potential tax risks associated with cryptocurrency transactions and develop strategies to mitigate these risks
  • Continually develop an external network for thought leadership and global trends

Minimum Qualifications

  • BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, or comparable degree
  • Advanced skills and experience with the U.S. federal income taxation of partnerships, particularly in the asset management industry
  • Have a detailed understanding of U.S. and foreign filing requirements and reporting obligations for private investment funds
  • CPA/MS Tax/JD strongly preferred
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience, of which at least 4 years is in a role focused on crypto/web3, in public accounting, a comparable industry role, or a combination of both
  • Intermediate level of proficiency with MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), GSuite, Adobe Acrobat

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $331,000-$386,000, actual starting pay may vary based on a range of factors which can include experience, skills, and scope.

This role is eligible to participate in the a16z carry program and various discretionary bonus programs as well as benefit and perquisite plans including health, dental, vision, disability, life insurance, 401K plan, vacation, and sick leave.
