About Our Group

Our technology development group designs Heat Assisted Magnetic Recording (HAMR) heads for future products. We design the integrated optics that delivers light from the laser to the Near-Field Transducer (NFT), as well as the plasmonic NFT that focuses the light down to a spot size 10’s of nanometers, an order of magnitude smaller than the diffraction limit. We also design the magnetic circuit that applies a >2 Tesla, GHz magnetic field within nanometers of the NFT’s optical spot. This “leading-edge photonic and magnetic integration” designed by our group has made HAMR a 2026 SPIE Prism Award finalist.

About The Role - You Will

  • Work with the world’s leading plasmonic NFT design team to invent the next NFT
  • Use Comsol Multiphysics modules to model novel NFT concepts
  • Use Comsol Optimization modules to optimize these novel concepts for performance, reliability and manufacturability
  • Train Neural Networks to form surrogate models to optimize designs for manufacturability, taking wafer process capability into consideration
  • Work with the broader design team to integrate the novel NFT designs into the full HAMR recording head

About You

  • Good physics understanding, such as electro magnetics, materials properties, thermal transport
  • Experience with modeling software. Comsol will be used heavily
  • Experience using general LLMs to work more efficiently
  • Experience training and using neural networks
  • Introductory experience with programming languages (e.g. C++, Python, Java)
  • Good problem-solving skills and out-of-box thinking
  • Good communication and teamwork skills needed in collaborative cross functional team environment throughout the company

Your Experience Includes

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree student in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering and must be enrolled in Fall 2026 classes.

How do I start a Web3 career?

If you're interested in starting a career in Web3, here are a few steps you can take:

  1. First, it's important to gain a solid understanding of the underlying technologies that make up the Web3 ecosystem, such as blockchain, cryptography, and decentralized networks. You can do this by reading books and articles, taking online courses, or attending workshops and conferences.
  2. Next, you'll want to build a portfolio of projects that showcase your skills and knowledge. This can include creating dApps (decentralized applications) using blockchain platforms such as Ethereum, contributing to open-source projects, or writing articles and tutorials on Web3-related topics.
  3. Networking is also an important part of any career, and the Web3 space is no exception. Attend meetups and conferences, join online communities, and make connections with other professionals in the field. This can help you learn from others, share your own expertise, and potentially find job opportunities.
  4. Finally, consider getting certified in Web3 technologies. There are several organizations that offer certification programs, which can help demonstrate your proficiency and set you apart from other candidates in the job market.
