Associate General Counsel - Crypto

A leading decentralized finance (“DeFi”) company based in New York is in search of a skilled Senior Crypto Counsel to join our Legal Team. Reporting directly to the General Counsel, this role stands at the forefront of legal innovation in the ever-evolving world of decentralized finance. In this role, you will play an instrumental role in advancing the company's aim to cultivate an open financial system and foster economic freedom worldwide.

This position demands close collaboration with engineering and product teams throughout the product life cycle. From a product perspective, you will be playing a critical role in developing long-term engineering, product, and regulatory strategy. You will also be developing internal policies and procedures for the legal team as well as for cross-team coordination, and remaining up-to-date on regulatory and other developments in decentralized finance.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Product, Engineering and Support:

  • Spearhead and implement strategies with product, engineering, business development, and support teams.
  • Offer comprehensive legal guidance throughout the product life cycle, from conception through to launch, operation, and eventual sunset, aiding in both the construction and, when necessary, the dismantling of products.
  • Provide day-to-day legal, business, and strategic advice to internal crypto-focused teams, addressing challenges and offering solutions in the development and implementation of groundbreaking product roadmaps.
  • Engage cross functionally to implement effective collaboration strategies with marketing and design teams.
  • Develop and deliver both forward-looking and ad hoc guidance to the marketing and design teams regarding matters pertaining to the product lifecycle and other related initiatives.
  • Establish or continue to build strong and positive relationships with affiliates and other ecosystem players for effective product lifecycle.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • 6-10+ years of post-law school graduation experience, including at least 3 years in technology-related law firm practice at a v50 big law firm.
  • Currently licensed as a U.S. attorney and holding a J.D. from an accredited U.S. law school.
  • Exceptional communication, management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience advising on technology transaction and product counseling. Experience drafting memos and guidance to various stakeholders of an organization ranging from individual contributors to company executives.
  • Experience with exchanges, market making, financial derivatives, cryptocurrency, and open source software.
  • Knowledgeable in a wide array of international laws, regulations, and frameworks relevant to payments/financial services, internet technology, and crypto, including banking regulations, money transmission laws, securities regulations, GDPR, BSA, CFPB, CFTC, FTC (including UDAAP), and more.
  • Ability to make sound legal judgments, applying analytical rigor, prudent risk assessment, and a mix of creativity and pragmatism as necessary.
  • Comfortable with risk-adjusted thinking and able to discern when flexibility in interpretation is warranted.
  • Must be located in New York, NY or be willing to relocate to New York, NY prior to your start date.

  • Interest in digital assets, blockchain technology, and the innovations brought about by decentralized applications, web3, and DeFi.

Salary range for this role is $170K to $250K USD (NY). Compensation subject to experience and location. Published salary bands pursuant to transparency laws, and do not include possible variable compensation such as annual merit increases, bonus eligibility, commission, or equity incentive.
