Background:
dot.LA is the premier source of news and information for Los Angeles’ tech and startup community. Launched in January 2020, dot.LA has quickly built a sizable audience and become an influential outlet publishing stories on Southern California’s expanding tech, startup and venture capital ecosystem.
Role:
We are looking for an experienced part-time reporter to cover the intersection of finance and technology—from the venture capital funding that backs and sustains tech startups, to the rapidly growing realm of cryptocurrencies, NFTs and decentralized finance (DeFi). Southern California is home to a new wave of financial technology (fintech) companies that are upending the traditional paradigms of banking, investing and commerce, and we want an enterprising reporter who can shed light on the emerging issues and dynamics taking shape in this realm.
The successful candidate will be a creative, curious reporter who can generate clean, well-written copy and tap into the people and companies behind this new wave of tech-driven financial innovation. They will be able to thrive in a startup environment by bringing a unique perspective to the subjects they cover, and a strategic understanding of dot.LA place’s in a crowded tech media space. They should be excited to “roll up their sleeves'' and play different roles in a fast-paced newsroom, working alongside a team of fellow reporters, editors and social media producers.
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Pitch, report and write original articles relevant to the fintech, crypto and venture capital scenes in Los Angeles and Southern California.
- Contribute daily news articles on venture capital investments in Los Angeles- and Southern California-based startups.
- Contribute newsletter essays at least once (1) per week for dot.LA’s daily newsletter.
- Be available to work at least three (3) days per week between Monday and Friday.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree
- At least 3-5 years of experience as a journalist/reporter, preferably covering finance, tech, and/or business
- Clean news-writing skills and a knowledge of AP >
- Experience developing and maintaining sources
- Experience building and engaging with an active online audience
- Excellent, team-focused interpersonal skills
