The Role
Unit 410 is a small, senior team of intrepid engineers empowering some of the largest cryptocurrency holders to actively participate in new networks and novel opportunities. We work with founders to launch new networks and are often the largest participants when they launch.
The Unit 410 Protocol Specialist works with our Head of Network Research, clients, founders, and core teams to optimally participate in networks leading up to, during, and post-launch, spanning domains such as engineering, economics, and governance.
You Are
- Curious: To succeed in this role you need to be relentlessly curious – you’re the type of person who explores cutting-edge tech. You might already be exploring the applications rising on new networks, and are testing out the latest cross-chain bridges. We’re all obsessed with crypto and know the ideal candidate will never miss a moment to dive deep into this emerging space.
- Collaborative: You enjoy collaborating with clients, core teams, and Unit 410 to facilitate successful network launches.
- Relationship-Oriented: You are long term oriented and relationship based professionally and favor non zero sum opportunities.
- Research Minded: You enjoy diving deeply and quickly into projects, protocols, and opportunities and are savvy enough to pull out the salient points to Unit 410 and our clients.
Job Responsibilities
- Optimize Outcomes: Above all, optimize the long-term outcome for Unit 410 and our clients’ participation across networks.
- Research Novel Networks: Become an expert in our clients investments and the industry at large and recommend actionable ways they can use their tokens. You have strong, yet fluid opinions and adapt your understanding based on new developments.
- White Glove Collaboration: Proactively identify needs for the largest holders and help them understand and scope their network participation requests.
- Roadmap and Timelines: Work across many pre and post-launch networks to identify where to focus our engineering for maximum impact.
- Ship: Work closely with senior engineers and core teams to facilitate launching new crypto primitives.
Requirements
- Crypto-native with a deep understanding of proof-of-stake and novel crypto economic system design.
- Ability to quickly become an expert in emerging technologies
- Clear communicator who can explain complex issues to diverse stakeholders and identify salient points
- Ability to model a project’s economic outlook to inform where we should, or should not, focus our efforts and propose changes that improve the viability of opportunities and system design.
- Passionate about the potential impact of blockchain technology and driving the industry forward.
Nice To Have
- Previously worked closely with layer 1 and layer 2 protocols (building, investing, researching).
- Has published research, analyses, articles, or blogs on blockchain projects or protocols.
- Experience working with, and deriving insights from, on-chain data.
Why Unit 410
- Opportunity to collaborate alongside some of the biggest and best crypto-native investment funds, engineers, and development teams.
- Work in an atmosphere that favors intellectual challenges and growth.
- Access to the scale and resources needed to power the future of our industry.
- Start-up size with industry-wide impact and autonomy.
- Great personal growth opportunities to grow and change with us

What is the meaning of Layer 2?
Layer 2 in the context of cryptocurrency and blockchain technology refers to a secondary framework or protocol that is built on top of an existing blockchain system (the main chain or Layer 1)
The primary purpose of Layer 2 solutions is to solve the scalability and speed issues that many blockchains face, especially those that have become popular and heavily used, like Ethereum
Here are the key aspects of Layer 2 solutions:
- Scalability Enhancement: They help in scaling the main blockchain by handling transactions off the main chain. This reduces the burden on the main chain, allowing for faster and cheaper transactions.
- Types of Layer 2 Solutions: There are various forms of Layer 2 solutions, including state channels, sidechains, plasma chains, and rollups. Each has its own mechanism for interacting with the main chain and handling transactions.
- State Channels: These involve two parties engaging in numerous transactions outside of the main chain, which are then consolidated into a single transaction. This is especially useful for situations where multiple transactions occur between the same parties.
- Sidechains: These are separate blockchains that are connected to the main chain via a two-way peg. They operate independently and can have their own consensus mechanisms but are secured by the main chain.
- Plasma Chains: Plasma chains are similar to sidechains but with a more hierarchical structure. They report back to the main chain regularly and are optimized for mass transaction handling.
- Rollups: Rollups process and store transaction data on a sidechain but post transaction data to the main chain. They come in two varieties: optimistic rollups and zk-rollups, each with its own method of transaction verification.
- Security Considerations: While Layer 2 solutions are generally secure, they can have different security models compared to the main chain. This is an important consideration for users and developers.
- Impact on User Experience: For end-users, Layer 2 solutions can greatly improve the experience by reducing transaction fees and increasing transaction speeds.
- Adoption and Development: Many blockchain projects are actively developing Layer 2 solutions to enhance their networks. This is an ongoing area of innovation in the blockchain space.
