We are seeking a highly skilled Blockchain MEV (Maximal Extractable Value) Expert to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will possess in-depth knowledge and hands-on experience in blockchain technologies, with a specific focus on MEV strategies and optimizations. This role requires a deep understanding of blockchain mechanics, DeFi protocols, and the latest trends and techniques in MEV extraction.

We are open to qualified candidates across the EMEA region, with priority given to those based in Dublin, Galway, or London.

Your Impact

  • Develop and Implement MEV Strategies: Design, develop, and implement advanced MEV strategies to maximize extractable value for supported blockchain network infrastructure.

  • Analyze Blockchain Data: Conduct comprehensive analysis of blockchain data to identify opportunities for MEV optimisation for validators Blockdaemon operates.

  • Research and Development: Stay updated with the latest research and developments in the blockchain and DeFi space, particularly in MEV and the role validators play in the value chain.

  • Collaborate with Development Teams: Work closely with blockchain developers, data scientists, node operators, and other stakeholders to integrate MEV strategies into existing systems and protocols.

  • Security and Compliance: Ensure all MEV extraction activities comply with relevant legal and regulatory standards and do not compromise the security and integrity of blockchain networks.

  • Performance Monitoring: Continuously monitor the performance of implemented MEV strategies and make necessary adjustments to optimize outcomes.

  • Tracking and Accountability: Track the results of MEV strategies in production environments, and be accountable for optimal MEV validator operations.

Role Requirements

  • Educational Background: Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field or demonstrable experience working in a Software Development capacity, Ideally related to blockchain technologies. 

  • Blockchain Expertise: Extensive experience with blockchain technologies, particularly Ethereum and other EVM-compatible chains.

  • MEV Knowledge: Deep understanding of Maximal Extractable Value (MEV) concepts, strategies, and tools.

  • Smart Contracts: Proficiency in writing and optimizing smart contracts using Solidity or Vyper.

  • Programming Skills: Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Go, or Rust.

  • Analytical Skills: Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex blockchain data.

  • DeFi Knowledge: Familiarity with DeFi protocols and ecosystems.

  • Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically and creatively.

  • Communication Skills: Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

Nice-to-Have Skills

  • Experience with MEV Tools: Hands-on experience with MEV tools and platforms such as Flashbots, MEV Relays, Ethereum POS.

  • Research Experience: Prior experience in blockchain research or a strong academic background in relevant fields.

  • Security Knowledge: Understanding of blockchain security principles and best practices.

  • Community Involvement: Active involvement in the blockchain and DeFi communities.

  • Leadership Experience: Past experience working in a remote environment leading a team.

  • Experience with Blockchain Infrastructure: Experience and understanding of blockchain validators, RPC nodes and P2P networks.

  • Data Visualisations: Experience with Grafana, Prometheus or related metrics and visualization tools.

What Is MEV in crypto?

Maximal extractable value (MEV) is the highest amount of value that miners or network validators can obtain by manipulating the ordering and arrangement of transactions before they are recorded on the blockchain

Often referred to as an “invisible tax” on other market participants, MEV is notably prevalent on Ethereum—though it is not exclusive to that platform.

What does MEV Engineers do?

MEV (Maximal Extractable Value) engineers specialize in identifying, exploiting, and/or mitigating opportunities for value extraction within blockchain ecosystems

Here are some of their core responsibilities:

  1. Analyzing Transaction Flows: MEV engineers study mempools (where pending transactions live) and on-chain data to detect patterns or opportunities for reordering, sandwiching, or other transaction manipulation strategies.
  2. Developing MEV Bots and Tools: They build automated trading bots and specialized software designed to capitalize on (or defend against) MEV opportunities. This involves sophisticated algorithms that rapidly scan and execute profitable trades or protective measures.
  3. Optimizing Protocol Designs: MEV engineers often work alongside protocol developers to minimize the negative impacts of MEV. They help design systems (such as private transaction pools or specialized relays) that reduce or eliminate front-running and other exploitative practices.
  4. Performing Security Audits and Research: They audit smart contracts, blockchain nodes, and decentralized applications (dApps) to discover vulnerabilities that could lead to unwanted MEV extraction. This includes researching new methods attackers might use and designing countermeasures.
  5. Contributing to the Broader Ecosystem: Beyond writing code, MEV engineers frequently publish research, collaborate with open-source communities, and educate stakeholders on best practices to mitigate harmful extraction tactics.
