As deputy editor-in-chief for beat reporting and editing, you will be a player/coach to help elevate the already excellent writing and editing produced across the entire CoinDesk newsroom as well as serving as a right hand of the editor-in-chief, helping to strategize, manage, and hire while conveying messaging and policy across the CoinDesk newsroom. All line editors will be dotted-lined to you.
Your mission: Take our high standards for reporting, writing and editing to the next level. You’ll work with reporters and editors to improve headlines, ledes, nut grafs and the rest of stories to convey the big picture in a way that entices the mainstream audience to read the piece while providing significant value to the crypto native. You will also be tasked with helping reporters develop a confident and consistent voice as well as helping to train novice managers.
While a sizable part of your remit will be to make our copy more accessible to those new to crypto, you’ll also make our copy smarter, adding market reaction to stories when appropriate and making reporters more sensitive to global macro events.
In addition, you will be responsible for writing and/or editing features, profiles and investigative pieces as the occasion arises. You will also pitch in, again as needed, to edit and sometimes write breaking news or handle an embargo. A news hound, writer and editor all combined in one person who plays well with others, takes ownership, communicates clearly, and thrives on making complex copy accessible, informative and enjoyable.
RESPONSBILITIES:
- Pay attention to global macroeconomic trends in the regions as well as crypto-adjacent areas to be able to anticipate effects on the cryptocurrency sector.
- Work with reporters and editors so they learn to edit/write concise, sophisticated breaking news pieces with a voice. The pieces will not only explain what happened but tell the reader why it matters and how it fits in with the overall picture.
- When necessary be able to assign and edit stories in narrative form.
- Ensure coverage of relevant events such as earnings by West Coast-based tech companies for any crypto-adjacent news
- Edit and occasionally co-write market updates, working hand-in-glove with markets teams in other regions.
- Spot, assign and upon occasion write about trends and characters in the crypto and adjacent areas.
- Liaise with the beat desks to ensure comprehensive news coverage.
- Focus on finding actionable trends to make our content as valuable to readers as possible.
- Help maintain a calendar of upcoming events. Analyze coverage misses to ensure they don’t happen again.
ABOUT YOU
The ideal candidate has at least 10 years of journalism experience and familiarity with cryptocurrency and related technologies. Leadership experience and strong writing/editing skills required. You are a self-starter with an insatiable intellectual curiosity, a nose for news, and a can-do/collaborative attitude who can both edit and write. You plan well for the things that can be anticipated and react quickly to the things that can’t.
Location & Shift:
Ideal location anywhere in the U.S.
