Background:
dot.LA is the premier source of news and information for Los Angeles’ tech and startup community. Launched in January 2020, dot.LA has quickly built a sizable audience and become an influential outlet publishing stories on Southern California’s expanding tech, startup and venture capital ecosystem.
Role:
We are seeking an experienced reporter to cover Los Angeles’ diverse and expanding tech industry, with a particular emphasis on the intersection of finance and technology. This reporter will be comfortable sourcing up on and writing about the venture capital funding that backs and sustains tech startups, as well as the rapidly growing realm of cryptocurrencies, NFTs and decentralized finance (DeFi). Southern California is home to a new wave of financial technology (fintech) companies that are upending the traditional paradigms of banking, investing and commerce, and we want an enterprising reporter who can deliver breaking news scoops, clever analysis and in-depth features on these subjects.
The successful candidate will be a creative self-starter who can generate clean, well-written copy and tap into the people and companies that matter in L.A.’s tech, startup and venture capital scenes. They will thrive in a small but driven startup newsroom by being willing to roll up their sleeves and play different roles as needed, while bringing a team-oriented work ethic to a staff of fellow reporters, editors and social media producers. While we want this position to focus on finance-related topics like venture capital and crypto, the reporter will also be able to—and indeed, asked—to pursue stories outside of those beats on occasion. Previous finance or tech reporting experience, while strongly valued, is not a necessity—so long as the journalist has a good track record, shows an ability to grasp these subjects and can convey how they would cover their beat.
This is a full-time position that comes with health, dental and vision insurance benefits.
Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Pitch, report and write original articles relevant to the tech, startup and venture capital scenes in Los Angeles and Southern California, with an emphasis on the realms of finance and crypto.
  • Contribute daily news articles on venture capital investments in Los Angeles- and Southern California-based startups.
  • Pursue in-depth, originally reported feature stories on companies, people, issues and trends relevant to Los Angeles and Southern California’s tech scene.
  • Contribute newsletter essays at least once (1) per week for dot.LA’s daily newsletter.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • At least 3-5 years of experience as a journalist/reporter, preferably covering finance, tech, and/or business
  • Clean news-writing skills and a knowledge of AP >
  • Experience developing and maintaining sources
  • Experience building and engaging with an active online audience
  • Excellent, team-focused interpersonal skills
