Legal Counsel
The job exists to make sure Shakepay is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations for its business.
Internally: We offer support to each team with their legal questions and requests. Whether it is compliance, privacy, AML, product, contract, the goal is to provide a quick and clear response resulting in an outcome that is not only legally accurate, but also taking into account the values that make up Shakepay.
Externally: Protect Shakepay and its customers' interests. Work with external vendors and regulators to reach positive business outcomes on legal arrangements.
You will
- Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to proactively identify and address potential legal issues and risks.
- Offer strategic legal guidance on all areas of the business including commercial, securities, consumer protection, IP, employment, privacy, marketing, and regulatory.
- Contribute to the development and launch of innovative products and services by providing legal support
- Offer guidance in regulatory compliance, staying on top of changes in laws and regulations related to financial services
- Prepare, draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts and provide legal advice regarding the associated risks
- Liaise with external law firms when necessary to ensure comprehensive legal support and expertise
- Efficiently manage dispute resolution, law enforcement inquiries, and other legal proceedings
- Draft terms and conditions, policies and disclosures ensuring legal compliance and transparency
- Develop and implement streamlined processes to enhance the efficiency of legal workflows
Must have
- Bachelor of law degree and/or Juris Doctorate with provincial bar membership
- Minimum of 4 years of experience working in a law firm and/or as in-house counsel in Canada
- Proficient in legal terminology and operations
- Solid understanding of corporate law and commercial law
- Critical thinking and multitasking abilities
- Contract negotiation and drafting skills
- Ability to effectively manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines
- Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
- Comfortable thriving in a fast-paced culture, with a pragmatic, solution-driven approach
- Creative mindset and the capability to propose alternative solutions to intricate challenges
- Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
