Legal Counsel

The job exists to make sure Shakepay is in compliance with all applicable laws and regulations for its business.

Internally: We offer support to each team with their legal questions and requests. Whether it is compliance, privacy, AML, product, contract, the goal is to provide a quick and clear response resulting in an outcome that is not only legally accurate, but also taking into account the values that make up Shakepay.

Externally: Protect Shakepay and its customers' interests. Work with external vendors and regulators to reach positive business outcomes on legal arrangements.

You will

  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to proactively identify and address potential legal issues and risks.
  • Offer strategic legal guidance on all areas of the business including commercial, securities, consumer protection, IP, employment, privacy, marketing, and regulatory.
  • Contribute to the development and launch of innovative products and services by providing legal support
  • Offer guidance in regulatory compliance, staying on top of changes in laws and regulations related to financial services
  • Prepare, draft, review and negotiate commercial contracts and provide legal advice regarding the associated risks
  • Liaise with external law firms when necessary to ensure comprehensive legal support and expertise
  • Efficiently manage dispute resolution, law enforcement inquiries, and other legal proceedings
  • Draft terms and conditions, policies and disclosures ensuring legal compliance and transparency
  • Develop and implement streamlined processes to enhance the efficiency of legal workflows

Must have

  • Bachelor of law degree and/or Juris Doctorate with provincial bar membership
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience working in a law firm and/or as in-house counsel in Canada
  • Proficient in legal terminology and operations
  • Solid understanding of corporate law and commercial law
  • Critical thinking and multitasking abilities
  • Contract negotiation and drafting skills
  • Ability to effectively manage competing priorities and meet tight deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Comfortable thriving in a fast-paced culture, with a pragmatic, solution-driven approach
  • Creative mindset and the capability to propose alternative solutions to intricate challenges
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English
