The Opportunity

The Star Atlas Engineering team is committed to creating next-generation software solutions as part of the video games industry. Our openings are fully remote. We currently employ developers who live across both the United States and Canada, and are eager to consider candidates who live in other parts of the world.

Star Atlas is a massive, 3D universe being built in Unreal. It leverages blockchain technology to reward players with an opportunity for real monetary compensation for their time spent in-game. We believe that the future of the gaming industry is at the intersection of virtual reality and cryptocurrency. Within the Star Atlas universe, every in-game asset is a NFT within the Solana blockchain protocol.

Prior to the release of the full game, we’re creating a web minigame that will allow players to engage with core game mechanics online, including:

- In-game marketplace to trade NFT assets and currency

- Mining resource deposits

- Materials refinement

- Exploration

- Resource claims

- Player factions

- Ship and space station customization

The company is scaling at a very fast pace. In 3 months we’ve gone from a team of 5 to a team of over 50 artists, engineers, and leaders. There are opportunities for entrepreneurs within the engineering team to rise into leadership positions as we continue to grow and develop.

Engineering Culture

The Star Atlas Engineering team is looking for candidates who are self-starters and think critically about problems. Being a 1:1 match to the skill sets listed below is not an explicit requirement. We value having a diverse team of differing backgrounds, experiences, cultures, and gender identities.

A certain level of baseline communication skills is a must. The ideal candidate exhibits traits of empathy and open-mindedness when communicating with others. Candidates must be fluent in English, but it does not have to be their first language.

Cultural selling points

- Our biggest focus is on the product. The most important thing is that our vision to fulfill the goals of Star Atlas is aligned.

- We believe that creating a great game will be the result of investing in our engineers. We put an emphasis on:

Carving out dedicated individual heads-down time

Aggressively eliminating unnecessary meetings

We prefer steady, deliberate work rather than cramming for deadlines

When you’re off work, work is off. Engineers are encouraged to have a clean separation from their work environment so that they can rest.

- We operate a shame free-environment

Every idea is respected and listened to. The ideas of a team lead are just as valuable as the ideas of a Junior

It’s okay both to disagree and for someone to disagree with you

Preferred Skills:

- Experience working with blockchain technology and writing on-chain programs

- Experience in the Solana / Serum space preferred

- Thorough understanding of blockchain mechanics

- A proven history of shipping high quality production level code

- High engineering standards with attention to detail in code quality and the user experience

As a Star Atlas blockchain engineer, you’ll be a key member of the team transforming game design requirements into on-chain logic. Your knowledge of both the Solana protocol and other cryptocurrency technologies will bring mechanics to life such as NFT trading, space combat, resource gathering, mining, and more.

On a day-to-day basis you’ll be performing R&D on game feature requirements delivered from your project manager, thoroughly testing the application, actively keeping up-to-date with current crypto trends and technologies, and writing on-chain programs to facilitate in-game logic. You’ll be part of the agile process participating in bi-weekly sprint planning, task refinement, and end-of-sprint demos to leadership.

What does NFT mean?

NFT stands for non-fungible token

In the context of cryptocurrency, a non-fungible token is a unique digital asset (ussually an image) that represents ownership of a specific item, such as a work of art

Unlike cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, which are interchangeable and can be divided into smaller units, non-fungible tokens are unique and cannot be divided or exchanged for other tokens on a one-to-one basis.
