As DeFi Markets reporter, you will be part of a team that acts as the window into cryptocurrency markets for CoinDesk and its readers around the world. Crypto markets are evolving and maturing each day with tens of billions of dollars traded on both centralized and decentralized exchanges.

Your mission: to ensure CoinDesk readers are fully up to date whenever and wherever something happens in DeFi markets, and that all content is accurate, punctual and written in CoinDesk >

Decentralized Finance (DeFi) is a subset of the crypto market and refers to smart contract-based financial services like lending, trading and borrowing.

The DeFi Markets reporter observes activity on the many blockchains branching out to offer DeFi services to millions of users daily. Billions of dollars are locked up on protocols built on Avalanche, Binance Smart Chain, Harmony, Ethereum and Solana, along with activity on up-and-coming chains like Cardano, Elrond, Algorand and others.

The reporter seeks out actionable information about DeFi protocols that helps with insights for both crypto natives and beginners. Daily reports on on-chain trading and transactional activity, DeFi market movers, hacks and protocols gaining traction are expected.

Longer-form features that include deeper dives into DeFi projects and interviews with DeFi builders are another key part of this role.

Successful candidates work with markets editors in Asia and report to the Managing Editor of Markets.

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor the markets for moves, headline and storify notable moves.
  • Scan market data, on-chain data, news outlets, blogs, websites, social media, online forums and other information sources for market-related news that readers would want to know, writing as appropriate.
  • Pay attention to global macroeconomic trends in the regions as well as crypto-adjacent areas to be able to anticipate effects on the crypto market.
  • Learn to write concise, sophisticated breaking news pieces with a voice. The pieces will not only explain what happened but ideally will tell the reader why it matters and how it fits in with the overall picture.
  • Write or contribute to daily market updates, working hand-in-glove with market teams in other regions.
  • Occasionally write spot news to help ensure comprehensive news coverage.

  • Assist CoinDesk in building local relationships in coordination with other teams.

  • Occasionally attend relevant events, meetups and conferences, covering as appropriate.

About You:

The ideal candidate is based in Singapore (although remote working in a similar timezone is fine for the right candidate) and has at least two years of wire service experience covering markets and familiarity with cryptocurrency and related technologies. People with trading desk backgrounds and strong Rolodexes will also be considered, though they would also need a proven track record of strong writing and publishing regularly, if not daily. You are a self-starter with an insatiable intellectual curiosity, high energy, a nose for news, and a can-do/collaborative attitude who can write clear, concise copy on tight deadlines. You're a team player who collaborates well with others and looks forward to sharing ideas and insights with colleagues.

CoinDesk focuses on News, Bitcoin, and Cryptocurrency. Their company has offices in New York City, New York, and London. They have a small team that's between 11-50 employees.

How do I get a job at DeFi?

Getting a job in the DeFi (decentralized finance) industry can be a competitive process, but there are a few steps you can take to increase your chances of finding a job in this field:

  1. Build up your skills and knowledge: To work in DeFi, you'll likely need to have a strong understanding of blockchain technology, as well as other related technologies such as smart contracts and cryptocurrency. Consider taking online courses or earning a degree in a relevant field to build up your skills and knowledge.
  2. Network with industry professionals: Attend meetups and conferences related to DeFi and make connections with professionals in the industry. Networking can be a valuable way to learn about job openings and get your foot in the door at a DeFi company.
  3. Create a strong online presence: Many DeFi companies will look at your online presence (such as your LinkedIn profile and personal website) when considering you for a job. Make sure to showcase your skills and accomplishments online and keep your profile up to date.
  4. Apply for relevant job openings: Keep an eye out for job openings at DeFi companies and apply for positions that align with your skills and experience. Apply for DeFi Jobs without Experience. Tailor your resume and cover letter to the specific job you're applying for and highlight any relevant experience or skills you have.
  5. Consider internships or volunteer work: DeFi Internships or volunteer work can be a great way to get your foot in the door and gain valuable experience in the DeFi industry. Many companies also offer internships to students, so consider applying for an internship if you're still in school.
  6. Be persistent: keep trying if you don't get a job right away. It can take time to find the right opportunity, but with the right skills and determination, you can land a job in the DeFi industry.
